Twenty oldest memories of Saipan . . . okay, here goes:
1. Getting off the Continental airlines flight on or about June 30, 1974, at the old airport in Koblerville with a concrete air terminal building no larger than a three-bedroom house.
2. Riding up Middle Road in the covered back of a Peace Corp's pickup for an island tour with both sides of almost the entire length of the road sporting tangantangan instead of buildings.
3. Peace Corp training at the Sister's Convent in Susupe, where we lived dormitory style and young women from Micronesia studying with the sisters lived in another part of the building and shared the grounds with us.
4. Ben Attao as PC training officer, Ben Sablan (later Speaker of the House) also as a PC staffer, Mitch Pangelinan as PC Administrative Officer, PC Headquarters in the Sister's Convent building.
4. Peace Corps language and cross-cultural training with Tom Camacho (Disabilities Council) as a language instructor.
5. The old Royal Taga hotel in Susupe (site now the World Resort).
6. Stepping on a nail while helping tear down an old house during my first week or two on the island and being taken to the old Dr. Torres Hospital (now NMC) by Angelo's dad for a tetanus shot.
7. Ed Deleon Guerrero (Eve's husband) with wavy long hear, beads, and a Datsun 240Z with no doors.
8. Staying for a week with a Carolinian family in Chalan Kanoa District 4 near the beach (just a few houses away from the old Kiyu residence).
9. Working with the Susupe youth club, working with Susupe village commissioner Frank Demapan to prevent the area between Grand Hotel and Saipan Community Church from being leased for commercial development, organizing the first women's basketball league on Saipan and the largest junior and senior men's basketball leagues then, helping organize the Island Youth Council as a nonprofit corporation.
10. Spearfishing in Tanapag, cooking Tataga and breadfruit on a fire at the beach and washing it down with beer.
11. Walking from Tanapag to Susupe, at a time when walking was, socially, well, something only peculiar people did, when a popular thing to shout from a car when seeing someone walking was, "Tired of Walking? [pause] Run!"
12. Spelunking (caving) in Marpi, finding war artifacts and collecting some (Japanese medicine bottles, etc.), with Mike Kenny, Ben Taitano, Gus, and others.
13. Rappeling into Kalabera cave and discovering a narrow passage into a chamber with the most spectacular formations.
14. Sailing the New World, a 100 foot sailboat, (never used the engine) to the northern islands, specifically Agrigan and back, with stops at Pagan and Anatahan, with the crew, some fellow PCVs, and Marty Taylor and his wife then.
15. Discussing politics with Oscar Rasa at the Free Press offices in San Jose during the campaign for and against the Covenant.
16. Drinking whiskey with Abed Younis at the Marianas Variety office, Beach Road, San Jose and trying to solve all the world's problems.
17. The offices of I Gaseta, the newspaper of the late Ben Camacho, "munchi na rah rah," in the building in Susupe that is now Joe Hill's office, and Saipan's first strip club: on the 2nd floor of the same building -- where my office is now.
18. Training people how to rappel at the old Japanese lighthouse, including Ben Taitano, down the outside and free drop down the center, long before it was renovated and expanded to become a restaurant.
19. Collecting glass balls near dawn from the secluded beaches on the back side of the island, particularly Talafofo and Jeffery's, long before Kingfisher was even a gleam in a developer's eye. Shoot, the only golf course on the island was Whispering Palms in Chalan Kiya!
20. Life's a Beach . . . Pub! My beachfront bar and restaurant from 1986 to 1989 (it's now Oleai Beach Club and in earlier days was the California Beach Inn, owned by Don Bufton and June Riley, who later owned the Saipan Lady when it operated at Fishing base -- after Don salvaged the vessel and gained ownership under the law of salvage).
Gosh, I did it! And I could easily come up with lots more: jumping speed bumps in San Antonio on a motorcycle ... and crashing; Angelo's dad driving an old military jeep down to Wing Beach; my own 1942 flat head 4 military jeep years later; voters repealing casino gambling by referendum; working for Manny Villagomez (Kiyu) in 1976 at his Chalan Kanoa store immediately after completing my PC service; and so on, and on, and on ...
Awesome response Stephen. I had no idea you had been around here that long! You reminded me of one of my other favorties long gone now, the "Ship Ashore" Restaurant. They had the best mud pie that Saipan has ever had...Oh, and another pops in mind...Cow Town..I remember my mom taking us there a couple times for dinner and how I thought it was so amazing that it felt like I was in a diffrent world down there with the smell of the cows, the big drive in movie screen and the tee pee's...It's amazing how much has changed when you really sit down and think about it..
Thanks for sharing those memories with us, I hope you post them on your blog and tag 10 more people!

Tamara,
The Ship Ashore was the Saipan Lady. I had forgotten the business name, Saipan Lady was the name of the vessel. Don and June sold the Ship Ashore to Jack and Annie Little. I don't know whether your memories go to Don and June's time or Jack and Annie's ... or both.
I used to hang out at Round 2 in the 80s while Don and Nola Pangelinan were running it, both before and after they expanded it. They always owned it, but it worked much better when they operated it rather than someone else. I think Don Bufton has it now, but I have not been in the place for probably 15 years, so can't comment on present character.
I did my 20 before reading your 20 memories, which I liked so much I commented there too.
It's a funny thing, I never went to Cow Town, though I know a something of its history. Larry Hillblom built it because his manager for Bank of Saipan liked that kind of thing. In other words, it was a business enterprise Larry financed by Larry not so much as a business plan / financial analysis kind of thing but out of his personal relationship with one of his executives.
Since I'm now on Larry Hillblom stories, I'll share another tidbit. In his office, he kept a big chart on the wall of local families, so he could learn how people he might want to deal with were related to others.
Steve, you are supposed to post this on your blog....and then tag a few other people.
Tami, go ahead and leave comments on all the blogs you tagged, telling them to read your blog and then that they need to pass it along.
Steve,
I remember Don and June and Jack and Annie at the ship ashore.
I also learned how to play pool from Uncle Don and Nola at Round Two..My mom was really good friends with them..I was just a little trouble maker back then, but I loved when my mom would take us there and let us play pool..
Lots of great memories!
cool tidbit about LH too.
20 oldest memories? Shoot! Give me some time think first, I still can't count past 10. It'll be on my next post.
